It trusts Abbavarams face and his restraint to do the work. He earns that trust.
If Abbavaram is the films warmth Sri Gouri Priya is its gravity. She is, without competition the best thing about Chennai Love Story and I don’t say that lightly. Nivi could easily have been. Played as a passive figure. A woman things happen to caught between two men waiting to be claimed by whichever one the plot favors. Sri Gouri Priya refuses to let that happen. In scenes where the writing leans toward the conventional she finds an interior life for Nivi that makes her decisions feel like decisions rather than plot necessities. There’s a controlled sadness in how she plays the scenes of doubt about her relationship with Ajay. Not melodrama, not tears on cue but the specific, quiet ache of realizing that something you built your identity around might not be built to last. It’s a performance that understands that stillness can carry weight than a monologue.
. The song “Gurthunda ” in particular is deployed at a point in the story where words would have felt clumsy and the music picks up the slack beautifully. It’s the kind of soundtrack choice that reminds you how much a good score can do when a screenplay trusts it to breathe.
Visually the first half also benefits from a sense of place. Chennai as a city isn’t wallpaper here. The film uses its streets, its particular quality of light its rhythms, to ground the romance in something tactile. There’s a specificity to the geography of this love story that a lot of romantic dramas skip in favor of generic, interchangeable urban backdrops. You believe these people live real and that matters more than it sounds like it should.
The Interval Block: A Twist That Almost Works
Every romantic drama worth its runtime needs an interval block. A moment right before the break that recontextualizes everything the audience has seen and makes them desperate to know what happens next. Chennai Love Story delivers on this front at mechanically. The mid-point twist genuinely does what its supposed to do: it recasts the relationships we’ve been watching raises the stakes and sends the audience into the interval with a legitimate question mark hanging over the story.
At over three hours Chennai Love Story is a long film for the story its telling and that length becomes conspicuous exactly when the screenplay starts repeating emotional beats its already made. There’s so many times you can watch a character have the same realization expressed in slightly different words before the repetition starts to feel like the film doesn’t trust its audience to have understood the point the first time. A tighter edit. Trimming thirty to forty minutes from the back half. Could have preserved the emotional momentum without asking the audience to sit through the diminishing returns of scenes that say what earlier scenes already said, only louder.
Sri Gouri Priya to her credit does her best to hold the emotional throughline together even as the writing, around her becomes less disciplined. There are individual scenes in the back half where her performance alone rescues material that on the page probably read as fairly generic melodrama.. Even a performance as committed as hers can only do so much lifting.
The predictability is the significant issue. Where the first half kept us guessing about the logic of these characters. Not “what happens next” in a plot-mechanical sense but “what does this person actually feel and why”. The second half settles into a groove where you can see the beats coming from a fair distance away. Once a romantic drama starts to feel predictable the tension that makes the genre work starts to drain out of it and Chennai Love Story unfortunately spends its hour in exactly that drained state.
Kiran Abbavarams Steven is, as I mentioned, genuinely lovely in the films hour and the characters central emotional wound. The confession about growing up without parents and what that has done to his capacity to trust love. Is handled with a delicacy that the film, elsewhere doesn’t always manage. Abbavarams performance is subtle enough that you wish the screenplay had continued trusting subtlety as the films default mode than trading it in for volume once the plot thickens.
Trigun, as Ajay has the hardest job in the film. Playing the “established” partner in a story that is, structurally about the audience (and Nivi) reconsidering him. And he brings enough dimension to the role that Ajay never quite curdles into a simple obstacle. That’s an achievement because it would have been easy for the writing to flatten him into a foil and to the films credit it mostly resists that temptation even if the character could have used another scene or two of interiority in the back half to fully pay off.
The supporting cast, including Sirisha Hanumanth, Naveen Neni, Pooja Dabbiru, Devi Prasad, Pramodini Pammi and Deepa Shankar fill in the world around these three figures competently giving the Chennai setting a sense of a lived-in social fabric rather than a vacuum populated only by the leads.
Sai Rajeshs writing follows an arc. His work on Baby established him as a writer with an interest in the emotional texture of young relationships. The specific unglamorous ways people hurt each other and themselves when they’re trying to figure out what love actually means to them. That sensibility is much present in the first half of Chennai Love Story. There’s a line in the film delivered with a knowing shrug about how a love story that looked exactly like every other love story wouldn’t even be worth remembering. And for a while the film lives up to that ambition offering something that feels specific rather than generic.
The disappointment is that the back half doesn’t sustain that ambition. It’s not that the second half is badly written in any sense. The dialogue is functional the scenes connect logically the plot resolves the questions it raised. It’s that the specificity and restraint of the first half give way to something more familiar, more expected, more like the “regular commercial love stories” the films own dialogue seemed to be positioning itself against. There’s a version of this film. More consistent more willing to trust silence in its second half the way it did in its first.
