There’s a moment, early in Spider-Man: Brand New Day when it becomes clear that this is not going to be the Spider-Man movie you think its going to be. Not because of a twist not because of a cameo. Because of tone. The quality of light in a scene the way a conversation is allowed to sit for a beat longer than a summer blockbuster usually allows.
This is a Spider-Man film that wants, deliberately to feel like its grown up alongside its audience. Tom Holland was cast as a fifteen year sophomore in 2016. He is not fifteen anymore and neither mercifully is this movie.
Without wading far into spoiler territory the film picks up as a direct continuation of the emotional gut-punch that closed out No Way Home. The spell that made the entire world forget Peter Parker ever existed. That’s not a plot device here; it’s the film’s entire thematic engine.
Brand New Day is fundamentally a movie about what it means to be erased and to have to rebuild an identity from nothing in a world that has no memory of who you used to be including. In the film’s interesting passages. A Peter Parker who is himself uncertain how much of his old self he even wants back.
It’s a rich premise for a fourth installment because it sidesteps the laziest trap of legacy sequelsbthe temptation to just repeat the beats that worked before with slightly higher stakes. Instead director Destin Daniel Cretton and writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers use the amnesia conceit to ask a question that the earlier Holland films for all their charm never really had room to ask.
Who is Peter Parker when nobody is watching, when nobody remembers, when the safety net of being “the local hero” has been pulled away entirely? It’s a story about rebuilding trust rebuilding relationships and doing hero work for its sake rather than for the validation of being recognized for it.
The Street-Level Spider-Man Is Back and He’s Better Than Ever If there’s one thing nearly everyone seems to agree on about this film it’s that it gets Tom Holland’s performance right in a way the franchise hasn’t quite managed before. This is the grounded most emotionally weathered version of Peter Parker we’ve gotten across four films and Holland rises to meet that shift.
Gone mostly is the wisecracking teenager who felt slightly out of his depth standing next to the Avengers. In his place is someone who has been through loss, real consequence and real isolation and who carries all of that visibly in his posture and his silences as much as in his dialogue.
This matters enormously for a franchise that has at times struggled to let its lead actor do anything than charm his way through a scene. Here Holland gets to do quieter more complicated work and it’s genuinely some of the best acting he’s done in this role. There’s a control to his performance in the film’s scenes. Conversations about identity about what he owes the people he loves versus what he owes the city.
That feels earned rather than performed for Oscar-clip purposes. When the film slows down to let Peter simply sit with how strange and lonely it’s to be forgotten by everyone who used to know him Holland carries those scenes with a maturity that the character genuinely needed after three films of him being understandably a kid figuring things out in real time.
The action sequences also lean back toward what made the character work in the place not cosmic universe-ending stakes, but street-level, personal kinetic combat that emphasizes Spider-Man’s agility and improvisational cleverness over sheer scale. There’s a pleasure in watching this Spider-Man solve problems with his environment and his wit rather than simply overpowering an opponent and the film’s action choreography understands that distinction.
Several of the set pieces are genuinely thrilling in a way that feels specific to this character than interchangeable with any other superhero property. The geography of a fight matters the verticality of swinging through a dense urban environment is used with real visual imagination and the camera stays legible even when things get chaotic which is not something every modern blockbuster manages to pull off.
Zendaya and Sadie Sink The Emotional Core Zendaya’s MJ has always been one of the grounded elements of this trilogy-turned-tetralogy and Brand New Day continues to give her real material to work with rather than reducing her to a supportive girlfriend role. The film is smart about using the amnesia premise to complicate her relationship with Peter in ways that feel emotionally logical than manufactured for drama. What does it mean to love someone who the world has decided never existed and what does it cost the person doing the remembering?
The film’s newer addition, Sadie Sink ends up being something to a scene-stealer. Without spoiling her role’s specifics she brings a live-wire energy to the film that meaningfully shifts its rhythm whenever she’s on screen and than a few reactions to the film single her out as one of its most purely enjoyable elements. A performance that manages to be funny and unpredictable without undercutting the more serious emotional register the rest of the film is reaching for. It’s a balance injecting levity into a movie that’s fundamentally about loss and reinvention and Sink pulls it off more often than not.
Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Thrilling and a Little Bit of a Problem Here’s where the film’s ambitions start to create some friction and it’s worth being honest about it rather than glossing over it in the name of enthusiasm.
Jon Bernthal reprising Frank Castle. A character whose entire identity was forged in R-rated brutal television. Is, on a pure charisma level, a genuine coup. Bernthal brings the coiled intensity and world-weariness to the role that made his television performances so compelling and his scenes with Holland generate a real, if unusual chemistry two very different kinds of vigilante operating on two very different moral codes, forced into proximity. On paper it’s an inspired piece of casting that gives the film a more grown-up edge that matches its overall thematic ambitions.
The problem is tonal and it’s one a number of viewers have flagged: the Punisher, as a character comes from a more violent more morally ambiguous corner of this fictional universe and shoehorning him into a PG-13 Spider-Man movie means the film has to soften him just enough that some of what makes the character interesting gets sanded down while simultaneously making the movie feel occasionally out of step with the friendly-neighborhood tone Spider-Man has always been built around.
It’s not a miscalculation. Bernthal is too good an actor and too magnetic a screen presence for that. But it does contribute to a sense, which recurs elsewhere in the film, of a movie that isn’t always sure whether it wants to be an intimate grounded character study or a bigger more explosively plotted piece of MCU machinery.
Mark Ruffalo’s. The Multiverse Problem That tension becomes more pronounced with the film’s handling of Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner. There’s something structurally strange about a movie that spends its best scenes asking small human-scaled questions about identity and belonging and then periodically detours into set pieces involving the Hulk and broader mutant-adjacent MCU machinery.
It’s not that these sequences are poorly executed on a scene-by-scene basis. Some of them are genuinely spectacular and the film’s action director clearly has command of large-scale visual spectacle when the story calls for it. It’s that they sit awkwardly next to the film’s more grounded ambitions creating something close to a tonal identity crisis. A handful of viewers have pointed to this issue: a film that’s trying to be Homecoming’s intimate character-first sensibility and a full-scale multiversal MCU tentpole at the same time and not always finding a graceful way to be both.
It’s worth saying this isn’t a dealbreaker. The film’s stronger instincts. The character work, the emotional throughline about identity and being forgotten. Are compelling enough to carry the movie through its conventional spectacle-driven stretches. But there’s a more tonally consistent version of this film that trusts its grounded premise all the way through, rather, than occasionally reaching for bigger-scale MCU spectacle as if worried the personal stakes alone wouldn’t be enough to fill a summer tentpole.
