The Mongoose Box Office Collection: 5 Shocking Facts About Liam Neeson’s Career-Worst Opening

The Mongoose box office collection has just made unwanted history. Liam Neeson’s new action thriller opened to only about $480,000 in the United States over the Halloween weekend, and trade reports published today, 3 November 2026, confirm it is the worst opening weekend of the star’s entire career for a wide release. For an actor who built a second career out of exactly this kind of film, the numbers are genuinely startling.

This is not a story about a film that narrowly missed. The Mongoose box office collection fell short on almost every measure that matters: total gross, per-theatre average, chart position and critical score. Here are the five facts that explain why this opening is being talked about across Hollywood today.

1. The Mongoose box office collection opened at just $480,000

The headline number is stark. According to Box Office Mojo figures reported by Collider and Screen Rant, The Mongoose earned about $480,000 across its opening three days, from 30 October to 1 November 2026. That put it at No. 18 on the domestic chart — outside the top 15 entirely, despite opening on more than 1,000 screens.

Other trackers put the precise weekend figure a little lower, at $464,421, which only underlines the point: whichever way the final number is counted, this is a sub-$500,000 wide opening. By Monday 2 November, the domestic total had reached only about $517,000, according to The Numbers.

2. The per-theatre average was only about $473

The Mongoose box office collection looks even weaker when the screen count is factored in. The film opened in 1,014 theatres, yet averaged only around $473 per theatre over the whole weekend. That means most screenings played to just a handful of people.

Screen Rant notes that this is the 177th worst debut per-screen average of all time, and several films playing in far fewer theatres finished above it. Aadarsha Kutumbam House No: 47, for example, took $1.15 million from only 367 screens in the same weekend, while the horror film Breeder earned $293,000 over the weekend from 777 theatres. The Mongoose had the screens. It simply did not have the audience.

3. No Liam Neeson wide release has ever opened this low

This is the record that gives the story its sting. Collider reports that no previous Liam Neeson film opening on more than 600 screens had ever debuted below $500,000 — until now. Even without adjusting for inflation, The Mongoose is the worst domestic debut in history for a wide-release Neeson movie.

That is remarkable for a star whose late-career action films, from Taken onwards, have been among the most reliable performers in the business. The Mongoose breaks a run of consistency that lasted well over a decade, and it does so by a clear margin, not a rounding error.

4. It is Neeson’s third sub-$1 million opener of 2026 alone

The Mongoose box office collection is not an isolated bad weekend — it is the third chapter of a difficult year. Collider notes that it is Neeson’s third film of 2026 to open below $1 million, following The Fix and Cold Pursuit. Screen Rant puts The Fix’s opening at $726,161 from 1,205 theatres.

Two explanations are doing the rounds. One is simple oversupply: three similar Neeson action films in a single year ask a lot of an audience that once turned up for one. The other is timing. Halloween fell on a Saturday this year, and the whole weekend was the weakest at the box office since January, with Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim’s documentary You Can See Everything topping the chart. A slow weekend hurts every film, but it hurts a film with no buzz most of all.

5. The film cost $20 million — and break-even looks out of reach

The Mongoose box office collection also matters because of what the film cost. Screen Rant reports a budget of around $20 million, which would put the estimated break-even point as high as $50 million once marketing and distribution are included. On current pace, the film is projected to finish its theatrical run below $5 million worldwide.

That does not mean the film is a total loss for everyone involved. As SlashFilm points out, Neeson’s action films have long made their real money after cinemas, on video-on-demand and streaming, and The Mongoose has already begun its digital rollout in international markets including Australia and Canada. But as a theatrical proposition, the numbers are unambiguous.

What The Mongoose is actually about

For readers catching up, The Mongoose stars Liam Neeson as Ryan “Fang” Flanagan, a highly decorated former Special Forces captain accused of a crime he did not commit. After a confrontation turns deadly, he takes a vintage Shelby Cobra Super Snake and leads law enforcement on a televised cross-country chase towards the Mexican border, cheered on by a public that treats him as a folk hero.

The film is directed by Mark Vanselow, making his feature directorial debut after years as Neeson’s stunt double and fight coordinator, from a screenplay by Thompson Evans. Marisa Tomei plays Tara, Flanagan’s ex-wife, Ving Rhames plays his old second-in-command Tanker, and Michael Chiklis plays Major Walter Pope, who leads the pursuit. Samuel Goldwyn Films released it in US theatres on 30 October 2026, with a runtime of 98 minutes.

Critics have been harsh — the film holds a 29 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes — but the reviews have been consistent about one thing: the car chases and stunt work are well staged, and it is the thin story around them that let the film down. Our own review of the film reached a similar verdict, praising the driving sequences while questioning the writing.

The Mongoose box office collection will now be watched as a test case. If a Liam Neeson action film can open this low on 1,000 screens, it suggests the theatrical audience for this kind of mid-budget star vehicle has thinned faster than Hollywood expected. The film’s second life on digital will decide whether this opening is remembered as a flop, or merely as a bad weekend.
