The Cat in the Hat movie is almost here, and it is bringing one of children’s literature’s most famous troublemakers back to the big screen in a brand-new way. This time the Cat is animated, voiced by Bill Hader, and given a much bigger world than the rainy-day living room of Dr. Seuss’s 1957 book. The film arrives in cinemas in North America on 6 November 2026, with the international rollout beginning on 4 November 2026.

If you grew up with the book, or with the 2003 live-action film, this new version will feel both familiar and fresh. The striped hat is the same, the mischief is the same, but the story goes somewhere new. Here is everything families need to know before the release.
The Cat in the Hat movie release date
The Cat in the Hat movie comes to theatres and IMAX across North America on 6 November 2026, and internationally beginning 4 November 2026, according to Warner Bros. Pictures Animation. That makes it one of the first big family releases of the holiday season, and a natural cinema trip for parents looking for something children and adults can enjoy together.
No streaming date or home-release platform has been announced in the sources checked for this article, and no runtime or content rating is stated in the official materials checked either. For now, this is a cinema-first release, so local listings are the place to check for showtimes as the date gets closer.
The Cat in the Hat movie story: a tough assignment
The Cat in the Hat movie gives its hero a job. In this version, the Cat works for the Institute for the Institution of Imagination and Inspiration, LLC — mercifully shortened to the I.I.I.I. — an organisation that sends him to help children who need a little more fun in their lives. It is a clever twist: the world’s most chaotic houseguest is now a professional, with a boss, a performance record, and assignments to complete.
His toughest assignment yet is to cheer up Gabby and Sebastian, a pair of siblings struggling with their move to a new town. Anyone who has ever moved house as a child will recognise that feeling — new streets, new school, old friends left behind. The Cat’s job is to break through that gloom with imagination, and the main trailer shows his methods getting gloriously out of hand, including a watch that can reverse time and a fantasy world that keeps shifting around the children.
The film also expands the world of Thing One and Thing Two, introducing more of the energetic characters and exploring where they come from. The Cat is warned that failure could cost him his magical hat, which gives the silliness some real stakes: this is not just a visit, it is a test he has to pass.
The Cat in the Hat movie voice cast
Bill Hader voices the Cat, and the casting is one of the film’s biggest talking points. Hader, known for Saturday Night Live and Barry, plays the Cat as an unhinged menace who believes playtime has become boring and that the only cure is to let your imagination soar. His comic timing suits a character who is supposed to be funny, exhausting and impossible to ignore, all at once.
Xochitl Gomez voices Gabby, Sebastian’s older sister, and Tiago Martinez voices Sebastian, her younger brother. America Ferrera voices their mother, Carmen. Matt Berry voices Waffles, the siblings’ pet fish, who is given the ability to talk and move from his fishbowl by the Cat — a classic Seuss-style complication. Giancarlo Esposito voices Mr. Hoogeboom, the Cat’s exasperated boss at the I.I.I.I., while Quinta Brunson voices Sherri, the organisation’s HR director. The wider cast also includes Bowen Yang, Tituss Burgess and Paula Pell.
A first for Warner Bros. Pictures Animation
The Cat in the Hat movie is directed by Erica Rivinoja and Alessandro Carloni, who also wrote the screenplay, from a story by Caroline Williams. It is produced by Daniela Mazzucato, with animation work from DNEG. Importantly, this is Warner Bros. Pictures Animation’s first full-length feature film, and the Cat’s animated theatrical feature film debut.
It is also the second feature-length adaptation of the book, following the 2003 live-action film. That history matters, because this version deliberately does something different: instead of remaking the rainy-day visit, it builds a whole workplace and fantasy world around the Cat, then drops two very real children into the middle of it. The animation style is bright, bold and cell-shaded, which suits Seuss’s world far better than a straight live-action retelling ever could.
The Cat in the Hat movie trailer and music
The main trailer, released in September 2026, is the best preview of what the film feels like: fast, colourful, and happily out of control. It shows the Cat arriving to cheer Gabby and Sebastian up, then turning a difficult family move into a time-bending adventure. A later trailer previewed Hilary Duff’s new single “CATastrophe”, written exclusively for the movie — a fun extra for families who follow the film’s music as well as its story.
