One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix is one of those titles that stops you mid-scroll. It sounds like a joke, a dare, or a headline written to shock.
In fact, it is the premise of a gentle Japanese romance that lands on Netflix around the world on 5 November 2026, and the story behind the title is far warmer than the title alone suggests.
One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix stars Ko Shibasaki and Eiji Akaso, two actors whose pairing already has fans of Japanese drama talking, and it arrives just in time for a quiet November evening watch.
What One Year to Live Buy a Man is actually about
The film follows Yui Katakura, a 40-year-old single woman played by Ko Shibasaki. Yui has built her whole life around one rule: saving money is the best entertainment, and the perfect way to kill time.
She has deliberately avoided anything she considers uneconomical, including romance, marriage and childbirth. Then, during a free medical examination, she is diagnosed with cancer and told she has only a year left to live.
Her doctor urges surgery, but Yui secretly feels relief. If she is going to die, she reasons, there is no need to save money anymore.
That is when her life takes its strangest turn. Sena, a pink-haired nightclub host down on his luck, played by Eiji Akaso, approaches her and asks if she can lend him some money. Yui answers by buying him for 720,000 yen.
What begins as an odd, transactional arrangement gradually becomes a warm and unconventional bond, and, to their surprise, an unpredictable love starts to take shape between them.
One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix is therefore not really a film about a purchase. It is a film about what happens when a woman who has postponed living finally gives herself permission to live, and about a man who discovers that being wanted is worth more than being paid for.
The novel behind the film
One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix is adapted from the novel of the same name by Toriko Yoshikawa, published by Kodansha Bunko. The book won the 28th Shimazaki Romance Literary Award in 2021, and its original Japanese title is Yomei Ichinen, Otoko wo Kau.
That literary root matters, because the film’s premise could easily have turned into a broad comedy. Instead, the source material treats Yui’s decision seriously: this is a woman facing her own mortality, not a punchline, and the romance grows out of two lonely people recognising something real in each other.
Who stars in One Year to Live Buy a Man
Ko Shibasaki plays Yui Katakura, and the role marks her Netflix debut. Shibasaki is no stranger to leading roles in Japanese film, with credits including Battle Royale, Serpent’s Path, Phases of the Moon, Silent Parade and Nobunaga Concerto: The Movie.
Yui needs an actor who can be funny, guarded and quietly heartbreaking in the same scene, and Shibasaki’s career suggests she is exactly that kind of performer.
Eiji Akaso plays Sena, the pink-haired host at the centre of the arrangement. Akaso is already familiar to Netflix viewers: he led the series Inheritance Detective as Haie Nao and starred in Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead as Tendou Akira.
Sena could have been written as a pretty face with a sad backstory, but Akaso’s recent work shows he can carry charm and vulnerability together, which is precisely what this part needs.
The supporting cast fills out two complicated families
Around the leads, One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix builds two messy, believable worlds. Michitaka Tsutsui plays Masami Ikuyama, Yui’s ex-boss and former affair partner, who keeps tabs on her even after their relationship has ended.
Naomi Nishida plays Mizuho Maruyama, Yui’s coworker, a wife and mother who throws herself into her passions and lives by the motto that spending is love, the exact opposite of Yui’s old philosophy.
Mari Hamada plays Sena’s mother, who works to pay off debt while looking after her grandchild, while Yui Narumi plays Nachi, Sena’s younger sister, who has returned to the family home after escaping an abusive husband.
Yoko Moriguchi plays Yui’s stepmother, with whom Yui shares an uneasy relationship, and Ryubi Miyase plays Kiriya, a junior host at Sena’s club who Sena says reminds him of his younger self.
Ichika Osaki appears as one of Sena’s top clients, and Koen Kondo plays a doctor. It is a cast list that promises the film will not stay locked in a two-person bubble: both Yui and Sena come with families, debts and histories that will pull at their arrangement.

When and where to watch One Year to Live Buy a Man
Netflix has officially confirmed that One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix will be released globally on 5 November 2026. That means viewers in India, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and elsewhere should find it on Netflix on the same day, subject to local catalogue listings.
No subscription beyond a standard Netflix plan is needed, and no separate rental or purchase window has been announced. If you have followed recent Japanese dramas on the platform, this one sits neatly alongside them: a small, character-driven story with a big emotional hook.

Why this unusual romance could quietly become a November favourite
First, the premise is genuinely original. Films about terminal illness often lean on sentiment alone, and films about transactional relationships often lean on cynicism alone. One Year to Live Buy a Man Netflix tries to hold both ideas at once, and the tension between them is where the drama lives.
Second, the casting is inspired: Shibasaki and Akaso are both proven leads, and their age gap and different screen energies mirror the odd-couple nature of the story. Third, the film arrives at the right moment.
November on Netflix is crowded with Christmas films and big franchise titles, so a tender, offbeat Japanese romance stands out precisely because it is not trying to be the loudest thing in the room.
There is also a question the film asks that goes beyond its plot. Yui spent years saving for a future she assumed she would have. When that future is taken away, she finally spends, not on things, but on a person, and on the messy business of caring about someone.
Whether that choice is wise, reckless or simply human is something viewers will argue about long after the credits roll, and that argument is exactly what makes a small film travel far.
