You know the shape before the lights even dim a childhood scene that plants the seed of greatness a montage of struggle a triumphant invention or discovery a rival or a colonial officer to sneer at the hero and a closing title card reminding you just in case you’d forgotten that this was a Person Who Did Real Things. G.D.N., the film built around the life of Gopalswamy Doraiswamy Naidu sits comfortably. Perhaps too comfortably. Inside that mould. That’s really the story of this review: a subject who deserved something sharper wrapped in a film that plays it safe at almost every turn.

Who Was G.D. Naidu, Really Before getting into the film itself it’s worth spending a moment on why this story matters because the movie itself doesn’t always do a great job of making the stakes clear to an audience unfamiliar with the man. Naidu was born in the nineteenth century in a modest village in the Coimbatore region and by most historical accounts his relationship with formal education was brief and largely unsuccessful.

Not for lack of intelligence but because his mind seemed to run on a different track altogether one obsessed with mechanisms, motors and the physical logic of how things worked. He tinkered his way into competence than being taught into it which is itself a compelling thing for a film to sit with: what does it mean to be self‑taught in a colonial economy that had very little patience for indigenous ambition let alone indigenous engineering.

The kind of quiet unglamorous philanthropy that rarely gets remembered the way factory output does. All of that is stirring material for a film. It’s the story of a man who built something out of nothing in an era stacked against exactly that kind of ambition and who then turned around and gave a chunk of what he built back to the people around him. The tragedy of G.D.N. Is that it knows this on some level. You can feel the film reaching for that reverence in nearly every scene. But it never quite finds the dramatic engine that would let an audience feel it too.We open somewhere in the nineteen‑teens with a young Naidu scraping together money to buy a motorcycle off a seller.

An early almost boyish symbol of his fascination with machines. Only for that plan to get derailed when he stumbles across a group of protestors and in a moment meant to establish his political conscience early empties his own pockets into their cause instead of completing his purchase. It’s a scene thematically speaking it tells you in shorthand that this is a man who will always choose people over possessions, principle over convenience. The trouble is that “tidy” is often the enemy of true  and theres a sense throughout the film that scenes exist primarily to illustrate a virtue rather than to dramatise an actual choice with actual cost.

From there the film jumps forward and around tracing his move to Coimbatore, his struggles to establish himself as a mechanic and inventor his growing reputation, his entanglements. Some romantic, some professional, some political. And eventually his emergence as the industrialist figure history remembers.

The decision to jump around chronologically than move in a straight line is one I understand the impulse behind a rigidly linear biopic risks feeling like a Wikipedia entry read aloud and jumping the timeline can in theory let a film build thematic connections across decades rather than just chronological ones. In practice it mostly creates confusion about how the pieces fit together and it strips the film of the cumulative steady‑build momentum that a life like Naidus. One defined by decades of incremental dogged progress. Probably needed more than most.

There’s also a thread running underneath the personal one involving Naidus friction with colonial authorities and later with independent Indias own bureaucratic and political establishment, who weren’t always thrilled with a self‑made industrialist operating somewhat outside their preferred channels of patronage and control. This is, on paper some of the material in the film.

The idea that Naidu spent much of his life on the wrong side of whichever government happened to be in power not because he was a rebel by temperament but because he simply refused to bend his engineering ambitions to bureaucratic convenience. Unfortunately the film treats this friction as a series of standalone obstacles rather than a throughline so instead of building into something with real dramatic weight it plays out as one meeting‑room scene after another where officials frown Naidu makes a principled speech and the film moves on to the next chapter of his life.

R. Madhavan takes on adult Naidu and theres no denying the effort and sincerity he brings to it. You can see an actor who has clearly studied the mannerisms the bearing, maybe even old photographs and interviews of the man hes playing.

from audience, and Normal Movie good to watch the Movie in the,
