Moonwalk movie is the Diwali 2026 family comedy entertainer that brings back one of Tamil cinema’s most loved combinations. Prabhu Deva and A. R. Rahman are together again, 25 years after their famous run of dance numbers, and this time Rahman is not only composing the music — he also appears on screen.

That reunion alone would be enough to put Moonwalk movie on every Tamil film fan’s watchlist. But the film has more going for it: a dance-and-friendship story, a huge ensemble cast, a hero playing 16 different characters, and a soundtrack that was already winning listeners before the film even reached cinemas. Here is everything we know about Moonwalk movie, in plain terms, without the hype getting in the way of the facts.
1. Moonwalk movie reunites Prabhu Deva and A. R. Rahman after 25 years
The heart of Moonwalk movie is its reunion. Prabhu Deva, one of Indian cinema’s greatest dancers, and A. R. Rahman, whose music defined a generation of Tamil film songs, are working together again after 25 years. Their earlier collaborations gave Tamil cinema some of its most remembered dance numbers, and the makers have leaned into that history in every announcement for Moonwalk movie.
Rahman has composed all five songs of Moonwalk movie and has lent his voice to the tracks as well. For fans who grew up on that Prabhu Deva and Rahman combination, this is not just another film announcement. It is a return to a pairing that shaped how dance looked and sounded on screen in the 1990s, now returning for a Diwali family audience in 2026.
2. A. R. Rahman makes his acting debut in Moonwalk movie
Moonwalk movie also marks a first for Rahman. Reports on the film describe his on-screen appearance as a fun cameo, with some reports describing him as playing an angry young film director. Either way, this is Rahman stepping in front of the camera in a way audiences have not seen from him before.
That cameo is one of the most talked-about parts of the film. Rahman is famously private and music-first in public, so seeing him act — even briefly — in a light, family comedy is a genuine curiosity for fans, and a smart talking point for a Diwali release that needs to stand out in a crowded festival week.
3. Prabhu Deva plays Babootty, a young film choreographer
In Moonwalk movie, Prabhu Deva plays Babootty, a young film choreographer. The story follows close friends who celebrate life through music and dance, and that simple premise suits Prabhu Deva perfectly. It gives him room to do what he does best — dance, comedy and warmth — without forcing him into a heavy action or thriller mould.
The film is written and directed by Manoj Nirmala Sreedharan, known as Manoj NS, in his directorial debut. Manoj NS is the founder and CEO of Behindwoods, and the film is produced by Manoj NS, Divya Manoj and Praveen Elak under Behindwoods Productions. That background matters: the film comes from a team that lives and breathes Tamil cinema every day, and the tone they have promised is laughter-filled family entertainment, not a dark or cynical festival release.
4. Yogi Babu plays 16 different characters in Moonwalk movie
If there is one casting detail that tells you how playful the film intends to be, it is this: Yogi Babu appears in 16 different roles. That is not a typo, and it is not a small cameo trick. Reports on the film have consistently highlighted the 16 characters as a specially written showcase for Yogi Babu, one of Tamil cinema’s busiest comedy actors.
Alongside Prabhu Deva and Yogi Babu, Moonwalk movie stars Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan, Satz, Nishma Chengappa, Sushmitha Nayak, Redin Kingsley, Mottai Rajendran, Lollu Sabha Swaminathan, Deepa Shankar, Dr Santhosh Jacob and Ramkumar Natarajan. It is a large, familiar ensemble, the kind of cast that works best in a family comedy where every character gets a moment to land a joke or a dance step.
5. The music of the film was already a hit before release
A dance film lives or dies by its music, and Moonwalk movie arrived with its soundtrack already doing the talking. The makers reported a tremendous response to the first three tracks released from the film — Yethu, Tinga and Macarena — with a fourth song, Mayile, featuring A. R. Rahman and Prabhu Deva, announced to follow.
Choreography for the film is by Sekhar VJ and Piyush Shazia, cinematography is by Anoop V. Shylaja, production design is by Shanoo, and costume design is by Divya George and Swetha Raju. Lahari has acquired the film’s music rights, and Romeo Pictures has acquired the worldwide distribution rights. In other words, the film has been put together with the full machinery of a proper festival release, not a small side project.
6. Moonwalk movie is a Diwali 2026 release in three languages
The film will release in theatres worldwide for Diwali 2026 release, in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi. The makers announced it as a Diwali family celebration, promising laughter and unforgettable family moments, and some November release calendars place it in the Diwali week. Diwali in 2026 falls in the same week as some very big competition, including Ramayana Part 1 and Suriya’s Scene, so Moonwalk movie is walking into a crowded festival window.
That clash is actually part of the story. The film was the first Tamil film to lock a Diwali 2026 release, and it is positioning itself as the lighter, family-friendly alternative in a week full of epics and action films. For families who want a fun, musical night out rather than a three-hour epic, that positioning could work very well. Check local listings before planning a visit, as festival-week schedules can change.
7. What Moonwalk movie is not — and what to watch for next
The film is a family comedy entertainer, not a biopic, not a thriller and not a remake. Its story is about friendship, music and dance, and its selling points are the Prabhu Deva and Rahman reunion, Rahman’s acting cameo, Yogi Babu’s 16 roles, and a soundtrack built for the big screen.
An OTT release date and platform for Moonwalk movie have not been announced yet. That is normal for a film still heading to theatres: streaming details usually follow the theatrical run, and we will update this space when the makers confirm them. For now, the way to watch the film is in cinemas for Diwali 2026.
If you love Tamil dance films, if you grew up on Prabhu Deva and A. R. Rahman songs, or if you simply want a light Diwali film the whole family can enjoy together, Moonwalk movie deserves a place on your festival list. It is rare for a film to offer a 25-year reunion, an acting debut from a music legend, and a comedian playing 16 characters all at once — and the film offers all three.
